Description
The Kikkō (亀甲) pattern on this bowl is often used in Japanese and Chinese crafts. It lends its inspiration from the tortoiseshell that has a characteristic hexagonal design. The tortoise is a symbol of longevity due to its proclivity for living a lengthy life. During the Edo period, this design is also utilised for the production of Kikkō armour by Japanese samurai. Constructed of tiny hexagonal steel or hardened leather plates that were joined with chainmail armour or kusari and sewed to a fabric backing. Because it is flexible and foldable, it is sometimes referred to as Kikkō tatami dou (dō).
