The bowl includes a Kikkou (亀甲) tortoiseshell pattern that symbolises wisdom and longevity. Kikkou was a Chinese theme that was adopted by the Japanese during the Heian Period (794–1185) and employed in the imperial court’s decorating and attire. Later warrior robes, weapons, and armour included the hexagonal design. Kikkou’s auspiciousness stems from its relationship with the longevity emblem “tsurukame” (crane and tortoise pattern).
