Bento Boxes Melbourne, the Revolution

There is nothing quite like eating a delicious Japanese meal from a bento box. Available from close to 100 restaurants in Melbourne, where can you buy a traditionally cooked bento box meal?

The bento concept can be traced back to the 16th Century Azuchi-Momoyama Period (1568 – 1600). Farmers sent on their way to work to till their fields with hydrated rice wrapped in bamboo leaves to eat on the go. The concept took off, fast forward a few hundred years they became a luxurious way of serving elaborate meals for the upper class to eat while out on picnics.

Bento Boxes Melbourne Today

Today bento is no longer limited to Japan, available from most countries Melbourne is no exception. Japanese dining in Melbourne dates back to ’60s when the Sukiyaki House Japanese restaurant opened in one of Melbourne’s historic laneways, the Alfred Place. Although bento boxed meals were not on the menu it didn’t take long for the Kunihiro Ichikawa restaurant to open in Little Bourke Street during the ’70s. The restaurant thrived and became the training ground for many Japanese chefs that since moved on to open their own restaurants that we dine in today.

Bento boxes in Melbourne can be purchased over the counter or you can choose to dine-in at fast-food places or restaurants. Here are four picks for Bento Boxes Melbourne that you wont regret.

Ichi Ramen

Ichi Ramen

Ichi Ramen was one of our favorites as the service was great and the meal was presented with a mix of fresh colours that tantalized our taste buds before we got to split our chopsticks. Located less than 25 minutes from the city at the Box Hill Central shopping center in Main St Box Hill. Meals served in bento range from $16 to $20 and they had 12 options to choose from which included chicken, beef, pork, vegetarian, gluten-free, eel, mackerel and salmon. All came with a freshly prepared salad along with a serving of miso soup. Ichi Ramen is undoubtedly worth a try but be mindful of weekends during lunchtime they can be a little packed.

DonDon has been around since the late ’90s and well known for dishing out a well-presented bento boxed meal within minutes. Unfortunately, they only had one meal to choose from, including beef, chicken, rice, fresh vegetables and salad. We found the rice and the rest of the meal were cooked well and found it very filling. For a little over $12.00, their bento is served in an extra-large bento box: great find and super quick service.
