Bento can be traced back to the Azuchi-Momoyama Period (1568 – 1600) in the 16th century. Farmers are sent on their way to work with hydrated rice wrapped in bamboo leaves to eat on the go. Fast forwards a few hundred years, and they became a luxurious way of serving elaborate meals to the upper class while out on cherry blossom viewing parties.

Our first restuarant that serves Bento Boxes in Canberra is Izumi Bento Canberra, located near Becker House, offers great Japanese and Korean cuisine for dine-in or takeaway at a reasonable price. An excellent option for a quick meal. It’s not high-end or refined, but it does provide consistent quality and hot food at a reasonable price. It’s a family business that’s been around for at least a decade (originally at the city bus station); back then, there weren’t many options that we’re open seven days a week until late, and this was one of our favourites as students.
